Carnelian Crystal

Carnelian is a variety of the Chalchedony group Gemstones like Agate, Jasper, Onyx and many more. These are all Quartzes and are different from each other by their color, stripes & patterns. Carnelian is the red, or orange variation (in some occassions brown) of this family and generally displays solid color, although it can be sometimes brown, or with lighter or darker stripes and patches, and in many occassions will be "cloudy, hazy", and transluscent.

Gemstones usually fall into one of three categories of clarity with variations within that category. Opaque gemstones do not allow any light to pass through even if you hold it up to a light source. Translucent gemstones allow some light to shine through but you cannot clearly see through the gemstone.

Carnelian differs from many of its cousins in the chalcedony family in that it is technically translucent, you cannot really see through a carnelian but if you hold it up you can see the light coming through especially round the edges.

Its name comes from a Latin word meaning "flesh."

The red variety of chalcedony has been known to be used as beads since the Early Neolithic in Bulgaria. The bow drill was used to make holes in the early years.

Carnelian was used during Roman times to make engravings on, for seal rings or signets, as well as red jasper & probably sard.
